Holy Car Collection, Batman! See the Batmobile in Gatlinburg.

The Batmobile is one of the most iconic cars in film and television history. This sleek, midnight black vehicle is Batman’s greatest weapon in his endless war against crime and villainy. After years on the streets of Gotham City, the original 1966 Batmobile has found a new home at the Hollywood Star Cars Museum in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Located right around the corner from our cabins in Gatlinburg, the Hollywood Star Cars Museum features famous cars from blockbuster movies and hit televisions shows in recreated settings with sound, lights and action.

Origins of the Batmobile

The Batmobile was first brought to life by prolific custom car designer George Barris for the popular Batman TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward. In 1966, Barris was given just three weeks time to convert a 1955 Ford Lincoln Futura concept car into the caped crusader’s famous ride.

Crime Fighting Features

Barris did not disappoint. He reshaped the front of the car to look like the face of a bat, with headlights becoming the eyes and the grill cavity becoming the mouth. This 5500 pound vehicle features a 429 Ford Race engine, bulletproof wheel wells and bulletproof plexiglass aircraft windshields. When the Batmobile makes a 360 degree turn, two parachutes with Batman’s insignia are released from the car.

More to See

The Hollywood Star Cars Museum is actually home to two Batmobiles: the original 1966 model and the dramatically redesigned 1992 Batmobile from Batman Returns, starring Michael Keaton and Michelle Pfeiffer. In addition to Batman memorabilia, the Star Cars Museum also features the DeLorean from Back to the Future, K.I.T.T. from Knightrider, Herbie the Love Bug, and many more.
